The Power of The Word of God – Apostle Stephen Holford

(December 1, 2013)

Do not just be a hearer of the Word but a doer as well. What have you done with the Word? Have you allowed it to take deep root? When trials and troubles come, do you have enough Word in you to cause you to stand? Do you eat the Word? Is it allowed to go deep?

The Word plays a very important part in the trials that we go though. When the enemy comes to taunt us, unless we have the Word of God on the inside, we will fall victim to his taunts and lies. Jesus, when he was tempted used the Word. He did not argue or reason out anything, He just used the Word on the inside.

Suppose the devil tells you that God has abandoned you, what do you do? The Word says God will never leave us nor forsake us. After hearing the word on Sunday, do you remember it? Do you read it from week to week?

Jam.1:22-25 “Be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only.” Do not forget what you look like according to the Word. It is a mirror. Look into the Word. Be a doer also and be blessed. The secret for blessings is the Word. The early church had a dynamism which resulted in an excitement, fervour and passion for the things of God. This came about as they received the Word with gladness. We lose our passion for God when we lose it for the Word. Acts 2:42 They were devoted to the Word, fellowship and prayer.

Devoted – to continue to do something regardless of the difficulty.

The issue is not hearing or reading the Word, but how much of it we keep on the inside through meditation. 1Thes. 1:4-10 The Thessalonians received the Word wholeheartedly and followed on to put it into practice. The three things that they did on hearing the Word were that:

1. They received it with joy 2. They echoed the Word and lived it. 3. They did not allow great suffering to stop them from living the Word.

The Word has transforming power. It can transform everything about you; it is powerful enough to bring about change on the inside and out. It heals, delivers and empowers. It brings revelation and the Spirit of God moves upon the Word and brings life to it on the inside.

Let the Word be effervescent. Read it and if you do not understand, ask Holy Spirit for the understanding. The Word of God guides us. Ps. 119:105 It brings direction; it is a lamp and a light to our path; it reveals hidden faults and causes us to turn from evil to what is right.

The Word of God has power to prosper us. Josh.1:8 Reading and practicing the word brings prosperity and great success.

Give the Word VIP status; chew on what you have heard or read throughout the day and night. Find time to think about the Word, speak it, mutter it, repeat it under your breath. Repeat the Psalms and other portions of scripture constantly. Ask Holy Spirit to regurgitate the Word within you.

Prosperity does not come only by speaking the Word, but by doing it. When you act upon the Word, you chart a prosperous future for you and your seed. Ps.1:1- 3 Blessed is the man whose delight is in the Word who meditates and acts on it. Prosperity comes when we make a decision to shun evil. It calls for sacrifice; maybe for us to reorder our lives.

What the Word does for us 1. The Word brings strength 2. It affects our entire being Heb.4:12 3. It is alive 4. It is powerful, it has creative ability 5. It penetrates 6. It discerns our thoughts and motives 7. It guards our heart Ps 119:11 8. It produces faith. Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God. Rom.10:17 9. It produces spiritual growth 1Pet. 2:2

When we abide in the Word, it prays the desires of God which become our desires John15:7 It causes us to be productive Matt 13:23

Matt 13: 3 -23 There are four kinds of hearers: 1. Those who hear the Word and does not understand and the devil snatches it. 2. Those who hear and are not rooted and forgets the Word and remains unchanged. 3. Those who hear but are filled with the cares of life and the Word is choked. 4. Those who hear and understands the word and brings forth much fruit.

Jesus said “The words that I speak are spirit and life.” Eat them. Try to eat them more than you do food, not cutting down on food but increasing the amount of Word you eat. The Word of God is your life, your sustenance; you cannot live without it. Become “wordly.” Use the Word, act upon it, embrace it and allow it to strengthen you on the inside. It is a powerful tool. Be men and women of the Word.
