Altars, Gates and Covenants – Apostle Stephen Holford

In the Bible, altars were designed for sacrifice and not just for decorations. The Bible describes different methods for constructing altars. They were either for God or for idols. God took great care to direct people in how to build altars and what to do with them. An altar served as a means of communication and worship. Moses, Joshua and Elijah built altars in their day.

Today we don’t build altars but there is something called a spiritual altar. It is a place of an act of obedience. An altar is a place of communion with God. God gave specific instructions to Israel to build an altar. God told them to build it, put a sacrifice on it and then call on His name. When one put a sacrifice without an altar, God rejected it. In 1 Samuel 13:7-14, we see that it was not the fact that Saul could not wait on Samuel but when we look at 1 Samuel 14:34-35, we see that it was the first time that Saul had built an altar. God rejected his sacrifice because he did it without building an altar. An altar was always important to God.

We need to take time to spend with God. It is a sacrifice. God respects when we sacrifice time for Him. A spiritual altar is necessary and important. We can pray but our hearts are not in it. There must be a true spiritual altar which is a place of obedience.

Altars are also a place where covenants were made with God. We see that there are both good and evil altars. The cross where Jesus died became an altar because it was a place of sacrifice. An ungodly altar is raised by witches and obeah men. Even the devil understands the significance of altars. One needs to understand that where a sacrifice is made, a covenant is established and when a covenant is established, it is serious thing. An altar can bless or destroy and can promote or can pull down. It can enhance a man’s life or frustrate it.

Is there a spiritual altar in your home or in your life? Whenever men set up altars, God responded from heaven. When the enemy is coming up against you, you set up a spiritual altar (1 Samuel 7:7-10). You begin to worship and change the atmosphere around you. It changes your destiny and the destiny of your family.

The enemy seeks to imitate the real thing so that affliction can come on people. But we should not be scared because we have a God that is for us. Sacrifices are sometimes made to evil spirits to get their support. The Bible says that we should not eat things offered to idols. Too many people are seeking the occult because the church has loss its power but the church is regaining its power. We who have the true power are timid about it when the wicked are bold. The church has to arise in their position and begin to prophesy and interpret dreams. When chants and decrees are declared over you, covenants are made between you and hell (Deuteronomy 18:1-13). God is more powerful than the devil and we should not be afraid. The altar that we set before God is greater than altars made to the devil.

What happened in 1 Samuel 5:1-4, is what is going to happen to every evil altar. They are going to be broken and torn apart. One must be careful of what they bring into their house as they may be a representation of an evil altar. Evil altars bring destruction and godly altars bring life. People set up altars in secret societies, hotels and at the beach. Sanctify your hotel rooms for God, You do not know who was there before you and what they did. When you are moving into a room that someone was in before, get it blessed and given to God. Break all ungodly alliance and altars and consecrate it to God.

In Genesis 8:20-21, the first specific altar was mentioned in the bible. By Noah’s sacrifice, God was pleased and He responded. Abraham built an altar to God in Genesis 12:7-9. This place was not called Bethel as yet. In Genesis 28:10-19, Jacob then named the place Bethel. When Abraham set up that altar, it still impacted his family years later. You do not know the spiritual impact that can happen to your children when you set up an altar. Establish a spiritual altar in your home and God will respond. It may not be in your time but when your children enter that place, they will be impacted because of the atmosphere.

Where the house of God is, there is always an altar. Altars change the atmosphere around you. Don’t you think when you set up a spiritual altar that it would impact your family, your community and your workplace? Don’t go according to what you see in the natural. Start erecting spiritual altars in your home. Set up altars in the bedroom of your children and penetrate it with worship. Set up altars around your house, at your doors and at your windows.

If curses have been set on you, they can be broken. If you have visited an oracle, it can be broken. It needs to be renounced and altars and covenants need to be established to God. Set up a spiritual altar in your life!
