One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple. Psalm 27:4 (NKJV)
In Psalm 27, we see David casting a vision for his life and it is centered around three main things:
1) Dwelling in the Lord’s house. He does not want visitation, but habitation.
2) Seeing God in all His splendour
3) Inquiring in His temple where he talks to God and God responds throughout his lifetime.
David understands that this will take all his life and pushes against stagnation by desiring to be continuously in the Lord’s house. He understands that this is a journey and in his request, he casts his vision for the rest of his life.
David understands that we will not be fulfilled until we place ourselves continually in God’s presence. We are not from this earth. Our satisfaction and fulfillment are not possible when our highest goals are set on the things of this earth. Jesus said that we must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. We need an awakening in our spirits and David asks God to wake him up to the truth in his words. In Psalm 119, David says that God’s law is better to him than a thousand coins of gold and silver.
Paul speaks of a war going on in him to do what is right in Romans 7. Likewise, Daniel understands his own heart that is prone to wandering. Thus, in Psalm 119:33, he asks God to teach him His ways. We need a revival in our spirits to accomplish what is written in Psalm 27. In this psalm, David acknowledges his need for God in order to accomplish any task. God is the great need of the hour. We need a revival. It is a sovereign move of God. David wants fresh revelations today, not the revelations of yesterday. We ourselves need to set ourselves in position to receive from God and to allow our affections for Him to take root, but this takes time. In Psalm 119:148, David speaks of being awake late in order to speak to God. Those who really seek something are willing to pay the price. There will be up days and down days when seeking God seems boring, but the requirement is still to seek the Lord. God’s Word says that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
There are some things that God desires for us to do that we will not understand until we work in obedience. We have got to be prepared to sacrifice and to obey. We must also set our lives in order and prioritize. Consider Moses, who wants to be a friend of God and in Exodus 33:18, asks Him to show him His glory. Likewise, David understood that worship requires sacrifice. Our greatest need in the hour is God. Those of us who have intimate time with Him, are those who get into the secret place while those lacking the oil of intimacy, miss their season. When we overcome on earth, there will be significant rewards in heaven. John 15:7 states, “If you abide in me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” We are the ones whom the Lord uses to bring heaven on earth. God came for intimacy with us. He inhabits the praises of His people. If we start focusing on His miracles rather than on Him, we lose our way. Everything that we need for life and godliness is in God. There is healing, provision, peace and so much more in Him.
